We had the pleasure of Supervisor Ed Scofield visit us Tuesday. The driving force behind the effort to restore the Independent Trail in Nevada City, Ed gave an update on the progress of redesign and rebuilding of the trail designed for handicapped access.
The brainchild of John Olmstead, the trail covers a former hydrologic mining flume adjacent to the Yuba River crossing at Highway 49, north of Nevada City. Designed and built in the 1980's, it now is under the ownership of the Yuba Bear Land Trust and the State of California Parks and Recreation. It is also in need for serious repair.
Ed is working to bring focus on that need and, as a longtime Rotarian (two-time president of Grass Valley South), hoping to enlist as many of the area’s five Rotary Clubs to help do some the muscle-work on the project. Currently in the final stages of the engineering, the actual “hands-on” effort is yet to be determined or scheduled, but “I’ll be calling everyone when that step of the project is ready to go,” he promised. Following Ed’s presentation, a number of us indicated an interest in getting that call.
We also “induced” Kathy Williamson into the club. Barbara introduced Kathy, and presented her with the all the paperwork associated with membership. The new Lake Wildwood resident is transferring from the /Campbell Club. She brings her experience as president and several other BoD positions. Make it a point to welcome Kathy.
Join us next week. Tim O’Brian will bring his photography talents to us. His specialty is aircraft photography and I’ve seen some of his artwork from the Nevada County Fly-in last month. You really don’t want to miss this!
