He talked about how he grew up in Penn Valley and how his experience as a foreign exchange student (going to Chile to live with a very nice family and go to school) as a teen had a dramatic effect on him becoming a citizen of the world. He met his wife, from Chile, in journalism school in Chicago. He has continued to travel the world extensively as a journalist for a Norwegian magazine the focuses on the shipping trade (big boat) all over the world, especially the American shipping industry. (interesting perspective) Janet Wheeling was inducted as a member. She told us a little about herself….. She is a grew up in the Penn Valley and has lived here most of her life. She and her late husband (he passed five years ago from long illness) ran a small vineyard and winery from their property in Rough & Ready. After he passed, the winery became too much, but she continues to run the vineyard on her property. She harvests in October with the help of friends and sells the grapes to winemakers. She will begin harvesting Labor Day weekend, and every Saturday morning for four hours in October. She asked if Rotarians would like to help. When the harvest is over each Saturday at noon, she provides lunch to the workers. At the end of the harvest, she has a big barbecue and a celebration party for all who helped. We gave a moment of silence to Paula for her service to the community and Rotary .
