Mark's ReMarks

Hi Everyone,

Thank you Dr. Torie England and several her staff for their participation in our last Tuesday’s talk on the status of our local schools and the challenges Education faces in the future.  We are really happy to have Torie back among us after the summer break.

If you are interested in some participation in the programs at our schools, mention it to Torie at the Club meetings and she can direct you to the right person.

For those who are attending the Sacramento RiverCats game this evening, we trust you will all have a great time at the game with fellow Rotarians.

The Area 4 Grass Valley South Rotary Club is spearheading an area wide project to restore the North Star Mine Flower Garden to benefit the Area 4 community.  With the emphasis on area projects by the current District Governor, this is our opportunity to participate in an area wide project.  A District 5190 Grant for this work has been submitted by the Grass Valley South Club and is being considered for a 1.25 match.  Our participation is being sought for $2,000 along with the other Area 4 Clubs.  The Penn Valley Rotary Club Foundation Board will be asked to consider this request.  I guess I should just ask the Foundation Board to consider the request as part of this message.  How about it folks? We will be able to provide some labor that fits our skill sets (including age).

We will be inducting a new member (to our Club) during the 28th Club Meeting. Wow, new members three out of the last four meetings.  This is a “Great Job” by our Membership Co-Chairs and members who recruited these new members.

On the 28th of August, our speaker will be Stephen Browning a retired State Department Foreign Service Officer and former Ambassador to two countries, You don’t want to miss this talk!  It will be interesting to find out if Stephen had any contact with Rotary projects in Uganda when he was the United States Ambassador!

Please be reminded that there will be no meeting the 4th of September.  As Rotary practice of no meetings goes, 4 September will be a Dark (Black Out) Day.

Dr. Torie England's Educational Talk
Club Member Dr. Torie England gave a brief state of the schools talk to the Club last Tuesday. Shaun Hurtado, Ready Springs Principal, Melissa Conley, Williams Ranch Principal, and Aurora Thompson, District Student Support Services were introduced. Student enrollment in the Penn Valley Schools is up for the first time in 15 years due to improved reputation and stronger academic program. Rotarians interested in volunteering are asked to get in touch with Torie. Volunteers are needed to read in the classroom, help with programs and in a variety of other areas.
