President’s Message

Hi Everyone,

Andrew’s presentation at our last luncheon was very entertaining and loaded with very practical advice.  I found the historical significance of the Plumbing Trap particularly interesting.

Sheila Grizzell has been picked for a project in Lincoln on Tuesdays for a while.  We wish her well and look forward to seeing her at our luncheons in the near future.

We have our music and speech contests coming up in the near future.  Our club’s Music contest will be conducted at our 12 February 2019 luncheon and the Speech contest will be conducted on 12 March.  You will not want to miss these contests.  They are simply enjoyable.  The talent of our local teenagers will awe you.

We will be conducting a Club Board Meeting following our 15Jan19 luncheon.

I am looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

A Special Invitation from Torie:
Penn Valley School District Board Meeting
By Torie England
I would like to formally invite all interested community members to attend the Penn Valley School District Board Meeting on Wednesday, January 16th at 6pm in the Ready Springs Library.  The first item to be discussed by the Board will be a complete Facility Needs Assessment of both schools that our team has been eager to present.  This needs assessment will assist our Board in moving forward with asking the community to help our schools with these needs in the way of a school bond.  School bonds are very common in this era as facility funds are minimally provided by the State.  More than 90% of school districts have to reach out to their communities for support in maintaining safe facilities for students.  Our facilities are also available for public use so asking for this partnership makes complete sense.  My goal is to always educate the public, staff and families so that we all understand the needs, costs and options.  On the 16th, the Board of Trustees will have their first opportunity to see the full scope of our needs in order to determine next steps in the bond process.  I hope you can join us, even if just for this agenda item as our goal is to have outstanding schools in the Penn Valley community!  Please feel free to contact me if you have questions at tengland@pvuesd.org or 530-432-7311.

Penn Valley MAC Workshop
The Penn Valley Area Plan (MAC) 2nd Workshop will take place at Ready Springs Elementary School on January 23, 6:00 - 8:00pm. For more information contact Joannie Bumpus or go to the County website: mynevadacounty.com

Food Baskets for Local Students - Thank You!!
By Debbi Corbett
All-in-all project went smoothly this year — Holiday was organized (due to plenty of lead time on shopping list), weather cooperated with packing at Holiday, taking bags to schools (two days in a row), and hopefully (other than COLD), when families picked up the 90 bags we delivered.

As for costs — total spent on groceries (all at Holiday with gift cards) was $2,431.94 (divided by 30 is $81.06 per family).  I still have a couple thousand dollars in gift cards and I am sure we did well this last year in getting points donated.  We will get cards for the last quarter of 2018 towards the end of January.

Members can donate their WOW points throughout the year — any time they have 1000 points:
Just ask the cashier to donate your WOW points (Code 476) (increments of 1000 points).  The Rotary Club receives a $20 gift card for each 1000 points donated.
Thank you for your financial and physical support of this needed program!
