Science Night at Williams Ranch School

Club members came out in force to provide hands-on support for the annual Williams Ranch School Science Night. Families were invited to try out experiments set up at tables around the Multi-use Room, where Rotarians were stationed to explain the experiment and help the students. It was great fun to work directly with the students and families.

Successful Distinguished Citizen Dinner Honors Hank Weston

On Friday, March 29, over 110 attendees paid tribute to the work of retired County Supervisor Hank Weston at our club’s fourth Distinguished Citizen Dinner. The event was a combination of community thanks to Hank for his years of service and an opportunity to raise funds for Rotary youth programs in our area.

“It’s important that we work to support our youth,” Hank stressed in accepting the award. “It’s about the good we can do in our community through Rotary.” A wonderful video produced by Rotarian Larry Clark of Modesto highlighted Hank’s 45 years in the fire service throughout Northern California and his 12 years as District 4 Supervisor.  He was instrumental in securing funds to restore the Bridgeport Bridge. He also initiated the county’s first community Municipal Advisory Council for the Penn Valley area. This council gives community residents an opportunity for input on county land use issues. One of the highlights of the evening was when Hank discovered, to his surprise, that his three brothers from outside the area were in attendance. “This must have been the work of Kandy (his wife),” Hank exclaimed.

Nearly $5,000 was raised by the club from this event, which will support the Rotary Eighth Grade Leadership (REGL) program at Ready Springs, programs aimed at improving communications among students, Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) and Penn Valley Little League to name just a few.

Special thanks to all those who attended and contributed to making this a winning event.

Western Gateway Bike Park Update

Here’s an update from Service Chair Bob Kline on where the Western Gateway Bike Park project stands:

1 - Master Plan drafting taking place at Nevada City Engineering - Revisions to the map can be made once the final shapes of the park elements (Bike Park, Disc Golf an Dog Park) are mapped.

2 – County Environmental Department will begin the initial phase of the Biological Report, the final element needed in order to submit the master plan revision to County Planning Department.

3 - The website has begun to form – Site developers will work at fleshing out the content.

4 – The committee will create a trifold and a small leave behind informational card for use in current and future fund development activities.

5 – The Committee will meet at the site to discuss the layout of the park elements.  Local skilled bike riders will be invited to join this meeting to furnish comments and design suggestions.

6 – The committee will continue to contact people they think may be interested in helping the project financially so that we can pay for the biological report and other current costs.

Items to consider in the near future:

1 - Look into options for getting water (possibly through a well) in order to support the eventual park elements - this discussion may include the dog park group as they also should be using well water.

2 - Work with Nevada City Engineering to include sufficient parking for the bike park in the design.

Dave Walker Hits Longest Drive

By: Dan Halloran

A number of our PV Rotarians played in the Roots and Wings Golf Tournament in support of the local School District on Sunday, October 4.  I know at least the following played in the tournament, and there may have been others: Mike Dobbins, Gene Vander Plaats, Torie England and our foursome of Dan Halloran, Mark Fleming, Bob Kline, and Dave Walker.

My purpose in bringing this up, is that this tournament was the first time Dave Walker had played golf in some 40 years.  On hole number 15, there was an optional feature that a player could (for a modest fee) use an air gun to shoot his drive instead of hitting the ball with a golf club.  We chose Dave to use the air gun, and he sent the drive hurtling some 375 yards forward, enabling us to birdie the hole!  The photo is of Dave aiming the airgun.

Dinner with Ravi

Last Friday, August 14, President-Elect Luis Vazquez, Pat Swope & Bob Purcell, Darleen Won-Golder and Bruce Golder, Dan & Toni Halloran, Barbara & Ted Ross joined Joanie Bumpus at the Atlantis for a very special Rotary evening.  There was so much energy in the room as we connected with so many Rotary friends throughout District 5190.

At one point before the dinner, we noticed Rotary International President “Ravi” surrounded by a group of RYE students.  It was hard to tell who was having more fun, the students or “Ravi.”  And then, “Ravi” was right behind us.  Barbara was trying to snap some shots when he offered to take a group photo.   SO APPROACHABLE!

We made our way into the dining room of 600 attendees and were amazed to find our table was #18!  Doug, District Governor Nominee, and Karen McDonald were at table #8.  Rotary International President “Ravi” Ravindran was introduced with little flair by choice.  Hailing from Sri Lanka, “Ravi” is CEO and founder of Printcare PLC, a publicly listed printing, packaging, and digital media solutions company and the world’s largest supplier of tea bag packaging.  He is very practical and has a wonderfully logical perspective of things.

All this and the meal was DELICIOUS!

Hosts Needed for Kazakhstan Visitors

Carolyn Feuille of the Nevada City Rotary Club is heading up an international program that RI sponsors with the U.S. Congress, called Open World.  Hosts for the homestay part of the program for the delegates coming from Kazakhstan are needed.  If you and your spouse, or another Rotarian member you know would be interested in being hosts for a full or partial week, we’d love to have you participate.  Having a cross-cultural experience in your own home is really fun and a key part of the success of Open World, as thousands of American hosts can attest.

The program has activities every day requiring transportation to our meeting point, Paulette’s Kitchen in the Brunswick area.  All hosts must bring their guest there each morning by 8:30 am. and on most days, pick them up at the end of the day’s activities, between 5-6 pm. The dates are September 25 - October 3. If you are interested, contact Carolyn at cfeuille@espritgloballearning.com.

Past President Barbara's Final Notes

What a wonderful year we have enjoyed!  I really treasure the memories I have as your president.  June was no exception.

James Ronka gave us an overview of the SeaPerch Program, which is being introduced to junior high through high school students in our area thanks to donors’ sponsorship.  The SeaPerch is an underwater robotic program which really taps into all areas of STEM education through hands on experience.  You may check out more information about the program at www.seaperch.org.
Even though I missed the June 23 meeting, I hear it went splendidly.    Mark Fleming did an outstanding job presenting his craft talk as well as outlining his goals for next year.  Thank you, Bob Kline, for leading the meeting.

Thank you all for a wonderful demotion party!  Gene Vander Plaats created a very funny skit and his fill-in actor, Rick Nolle, sported the long brunette wig famously.  Luis Vazquez involved us in the most fun “challenge quiz” ever including oversized “expensive” playing cards!  I can’t wait for Hank Weston to cash in on his prize of a $1,000 matching donation towards his Arch C. Klumph Society membership.  Did he really know Paul Harris’ blood type?  Thanks to Earl Langguth for the beautiful poem and to Dan Halloran for his rendition of the “Oklahoma” song written with me in mind and to Bob Kline for performing it.   Thank you, Dave Walker and Bob Kline, for coordinating this event and for having Don and Deanna Batson film the event.  Thanks to Chris and Dale for providing a delicious meal as always.

Bob Barbaro was recognized with the Bob Henry Award for his tremendous support throughout my presidency, especially in the area of the Holiday Food Baskets, which earned us the Rotary International “Significant Achievement Award.”  Pat Swope received the first ever Dr. Holger Rasmussen Award for her  continuing to make a difference without seeking recognition or reward in her role as Program Chair for several years.  The inaugural Don Fultz Award went to Bob Kline for his efforts in International Projects filling Don’s shoes upon his death as well as helping our club exceed our Polio Plus goal by 300%.  It was extra special to have Kay Beeman, Betty Cook, Georgann Russell and her sister, Joanie and Carle Bumpus on hand to celebrate with us.

Thanks to all of you who contributed to The Rotary International Foundation this year.  District 5190 set a record in giving.  I believe that is why we are being honored with a visit by Rotary International Presdient K. R. “Ravi” Ravindran August 14th at the Atlantis in Reno.  We already have a table of 8 registered for the special event including Luis Vazquez, Darleen Won Golder and her husband, Bruce Golder, Pat Swope and her husband, Bob Purcell, Joanie Bumpus, Ted Ross and myself.  If you are interested in going, please go to http://tinyurl.com/An-Evening-with-Ravi immediately in order to guarantee your space.

I had the privilege of representing our club at the Grass Valley 4th of July Parade.  Area 4 promoted the upcoming Demolition Derby during the event while have a great time together.
Thank you for a wonderful year and I look forward to a fabulous year with Mark Fleming at the helm.  He needs your support, and, believe me, making a difference requires WE give it our best.

Polio Eradication - Rotary's #1 Priority

Polio
Poliomyelitis (polio) is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio is incurable, but completely vaccine-preventable.

PolioPlus
In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $9 billion to the effort.
